More News From Jamgrass 2013

20 Jun, 13 by Greg McGrath

JamgrassJamGrass Music Festival has announced further additions to the 2013 lineup.

The first artist announcement in May made it very clear that this years 3-day extravaganza will be a Bluegrassy, Jamming Force. (very similar to “The Force” but with more banjo and mando solos). This second announcement confirms that the bluegrass, progressive bluegrass and jam scene in Australia is hot and the best acts in the country will be congregating in Melbourne in October.

Mustered Courage.

Mustered Courage will be joining the line-up for the third straight year.  After announcing they’ll be one of the headliners for the first ever JamGrass ‘On The Road’ warm up party in Sydney this August, they will have been a part of every single JamGrass event.  With their continuing success, national touring and outstanding Album launch in May, they are at the forefront of the progressive bluegrass scene in Australia.

The Davidson Brothers.

Multiple ‘Golden Guitar’ winning Davidson Brothers have been supporters of JamGrass Music Festival since its very first year but this is the first time they’ll be in the country to perform at it.  They’ll be playing with their full band and based on their recent performances they are all playing at the top of their game.

Bill Jackson Band

Bill Jackson Band is going to be a surprise standout.  Known more commonly for his solo performances or being accompanied by Pete Fidler, Bill Jackson will be bringing his all-star band comprised of Pete Fidler, Shannon Bourne, Ben Franz and Bree Hartley to JamGrass.  The Bill Jackson Band performed with a similar lineup earlier this year and thrilled an intimate audience of music lovers who have not stopped talking about it.  We can’t wait to have Bill Jackson Band share their magic with JamGrass Festivarians.

The Rusty Datsuns

Brisbane based three-piece, The Rusty Datsuns (Qld) will make a stop at JamGrass on their national tour supporting their soon to be released album. Combining sweet vocal harmonies over a backdrop of deftly finger-picked guitar, banjo, ukulele and soaring fiddle the ‘Dattos’ live show has crowds dancing jigs and making merriment aplenty with their spellbinding performance. They’ll provide fresh take on modern folk with a healthy bluegrass twinge.

Appalachian Heaven

Appalachian Heaven String Band is a lively, driving five piece string band, playing traditional old-time music from North America including the Southern Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Expect to be overwhelmed and uplifted as this heart-warming band with an ethos to always engage and entertain is a must see experience.

Jimi Hocking

He appeared as a special guest at JamGrass 2012, and Jimi is back to perform a full set as Jimi Hocking’s Blue Mandolin.   Known for his blues guitar playing, Jimi’s love for the mandolin will see him right at home in the JamGrass lineup.

The Morrisons

The Morrisons (NSW) are one of the newest bluegrass bands to hit the Australian scene and are already making waves in Sydney.  The sweet bluegrass country soul voice of James Morrison backed by some of Sydney’s hottest young string pickers are sure to be one of the new discoveries for JamGrass Festivarians.

These outstanding artists join an already incredible JamGrass 2013 lineup which includes:

  • Patt and Possum (USA)
  • The Company (Qld)
  • The Steamgrass Boys (NSW)
  • The Green Mohair Suits (NSW)
  • Papa Pilko & The Binrats (NSW)
  • Quarry Mountain Dead Rats Strzelecki Stringbusters
  • John Flanagan & The Begin Agains
  • Hardrive Bluegrass Band
  • James Kenyon.

There will be one more exciting artist announcement to complete the expanded 3 day program from October 11-13.

Tickets are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks.

JamGrass On The Road

23 May, 13 by Greg McGrath

Jamgrass2012-2Jambands Australia has announced the first ever JamGrass ‘On the Road’ event to be held at The Red Rattler Theatre in Sydney on 3rd August, 2013.

Responding to numerous requests and encouragement to bring JamGrass Music Festival to Sydney, Jambands Australia has partnered with ‘Country Roads’ to host a one-day ‘warm up’ party in August. The event will be held in advance of the third annual 3-day JamGrass Music Festival in Melbourne from 11th to 13 October this year.

JamGrass ‘On the Road’ will continue the JamGrass theme of bluegrass and complimentary artists that jam. The initial lineup celebrates the thriving scene in Sydney with a few interstate bands to help build the musical connections of bands and fans across the country. Jambands Australia will be bringing with it all the elements that have made JamGrass such a success in Melbourne. Great music, great production, musical collaborations and good time vibes.

Advance Tickets: $23.50+bf. Available now from www.jamgrass.com.au. Ticket numbers are limited. Door tickets: $30 (if available).

The full lineup will consist of 8 acts. Two more exciting acts will be added to the bill as details become finalized.

Mustered Courage (Vic) – Mixing old-school bluegrass with modern roots music, they have played every major Australian folk festival in 2012, these down-home pickers are in the middle of their biggest year to date.

The Steamgrass Boys – Hailing from the Blue Mountains, The Steamgrass Boys deliver high energy bluegrass and original Australian Alt-Country folk music.

Rattlehand (Qld) – Their alt-country/ rock feel pays homage to the “outlaw country” genre of the 60’s and 70’s: it is a sound that happily deviates from the dominant paradigm.

Green Mohair Suits – The sweeping, expansive clatter and twang The Green Mohair Suits pedal these days pushes their country, folk and bluegrass roots as much as it respects them.

Oh Willy Dear – A four piece band whose music consists of a blend of Bluegrass, Country, Americana, Old Timey & folk.

DJ Dylabolical – Well known for hosting the long running Twist and Shout 60’s dance parties, DJ Dylabolical will be spinning a Jerry Garcia tribute throughout the night in honour of Jerry Week.

Jambands Australia are very excited to be working with The Red Rattler Theatre which is a great space and has a priority for supporting the creative arts.

About JamGrass Music Festival

Inspiration for the JamGrass Music Festival (JMF) was found in early 2011 when the newly formed Jambands Australia began video documenting a variety of up and coming bands throughout Melbourne. It quickly became apparent that there were a number of emerging progressive bluegrass bands that were seeking to find an Australian audience for a musical style that originates from the Appalachia region of the United States.

JMF seeks to bridge the gap between traditional bluegrass scene and the wider music audience in Australia who are often unaware of the raw power of the genre. There’s a growing following of progressive bluegrass or ‘newgrass’ bands in the U.S. which are helping to bring bluegrass music to a new generation of music lovers.

From a similar perspective, the JamGrass Music Festival is not strictly about bluegrass, but it seeks to draw on a range of musical styles and influences that will help promote bluegrass music to a new audience. JamGrass will include a lot of bluegrass classics, but the JamGrass stage will be one that supports musicians to experiment, collaborate and push musical boundaries.

JamGrass is dependent on its volunteers throughout all aspects of the festival. It is the hard work of this growing community that allows JamGrass Music Festival to create a unique experience for artists, fans, and general music lovers that would otherwise not be possible.

JamGrass Music Festival 2013

15 May, 13 by Greg McGrath

Jamgrass2012Jambands Australiahas announced the artist line up for JamGrass Music Festival 2013.

After a highly successful 2012 festival, JamGrass Music Festival returns in 2013 with another exceptional lineup featuring Australia’s leading bluegrass, progressive bluegrass and jam orientated bands. The increase in interstate bands congregating in Melbourne for the 2013 event is a clear demonstration of the festival’s unique focus, its growing national exposure and the resurgence of bluegrass music in Australia and overseas.

The first artist announcement includes:

  • Patt and Possum (USA) – Charlie Walden, an old-time fiddle champion from Missouri with Patt Plunkett on keys.
  • The Company (Qld) – Brisbane-based bluegrass band with a passion for high-energy original acoustic music.
  • The Steamgrass Boys (NSW) – Forging elements of bluegrass, country, old timey, gospel, and jazz into a twisted junkyard folk sound they call steamgrass.
  • The Green Mohair Suits (NSW) – Blending country, folk and bluegrass roots with musical influences like Beck, Fleet Foxes, Hank Williams, Tom Waits, Portishead & Gram Parsons.
  • Papa Pilko & The Binrats (NSW) – Wild Blues & Slick Swingin’ Country Rock n’ Roll… with Horns.
  • Quarry Mountain Dead Rats – QMDR’s instrumentation fits the bluegrass mold, but the influence of old-time mountain-music combined with rock‘n’roll sensibilities give way to something altogether different.
  • Hardrive Bluegrass Band (VIC/NSW) – Hardrive bring you the true and unique sound of traditional bluegrass music with high lonesome harmonies and blistering instrumentals.
  • Strzelecki Stringbusters – A 14 piece string band from the Strzelecki Ranges featuring guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, fiddle, double bass and harmonica.
  • James Kenyon – James Kenyon’s fine songwriting is augmented by gun musicians to form a unique slow-grass ensemble.
  • John Flanagan & The Begin Agains – Blending traditional Americana stylings with deeply honest Australian storytelling to create their simple and expressive style of bluegrass/folk music.

Two more artist announcements will be made in the coming months to fill out the expanded 3 day program from 11th to 13th October.

Capacity crowds for both days of JamGrass 2012 and an overwhelmingly positive response from artists and  festival goers alike has made it necessary to move to the larger Ballroom at the Thornbury Theatre. The Ballroom will be transformed for JamGrass 2013 with a construction of a second stage, additional PA and lighting, extra bars, stage and room decor and all the extras it takes to create a festive environment in the comforts of an indoor venue.

Jason Taylor, one of the Festival Directors commented that “despite the huge success of JamGrass 2012, we are always looking at how to improve, make things more exciting and provide a better stage environment for the extremely talented musicians that make JamGrass possible. It’s all part of our commitment to promoting these artists and these genres of music within Australia and overseas.”

JamGrass Music Festival 2012

22 May, 12 by Greg McGrath

Jambands Australia has announced the JamGrass Music Festival 2012 is to be held at The Velvet Room @ The Thornbury Theatre on 19-20 October 2012.

After a sold out inaugural festival in 2011 that was followed with rave reviews, it was to be expected that organisers have now expanded the JamGrass Music Festival to a two-day format. The festival will continue with its focus on progressive bluegrass and jamband related genres in order to support the continuing popularity and growth of these bands in Australia. The expanded format will provide the opportunity to showcase many more bands and will include a variety of local, inter-state and international artist.

They have announced the first round of artists:

  • The New Worlds (USA) – A group of professional bluegrass musicians from the United States who have joined forces specifically for a selection of Australian dates.
  • Quarry Mountain Dead Rats – Rockgrass renegades from the Mornington Peninsula, who were a late night favourite at JamGrass 2011.
  • Mustered Courage – The Melbourne newgrass group make their second JamGrass appearance after recently capturing the attention of Seal and winning a MusicOz award.
  • Rattlehand (QLD) – Alt- Country rockers Rattlehand will make yet another trip down to Victoria to the delight of their growing fanbase.
  • Merri Creek Pickers – After an unforgettable performance at JamGrass 2011, Melbourne’s leading jamband will be back with a bunch of surprises.
  • John Flanagan & The Begin Agains – A band that blends traditional Americana stylings with deeply honest Australian storytelling to create their simple and expressive style of bluegrass/folk.
  • plus many more artists to be announced

The new multi-day format has required the festival to relocate from the Bella Union, to the new Velvet Room at The Thornbury Theatre.

The new venue is the right size for the festival, has the right character and most importantly has phenomenal sound which is extremely important to help showcase the artists – Jason Taylor, Festival Co-producer.

Jambands Australia is currently in discussions with additional Victorian and interstate bands in order to get the right mix for the festival. Any bands who believe they fit in with the progressive bluegrass focus of the festival should express their interest without delay by emailing contact@jamgrass.com.au and providing any relevant information.

Jamgrass 2011 Update

14 Oct, 11 by Greg McGrath

Jamgrass 2011Last month we brought news of another festival on the horizon. Jambands Australia has now announced some of the program offerings for the inaugural JamGrass Music Festival to be held at the Bella Union @ Trades Hall, Carlton on 26 November 2011.

The JamGrass Music Festival has announced a lineup of bands, each of which approach bluegrass from a different perspective. The evening will end with the JamGrass Superjam, a collaborative performance highlighting musicians from throughout the evening.

The inaugural JamGrass Program includes:

  • The JamGrass Superjam
  • Quarry Mountain Dead Rats – rockgrass
  • Mustered Courage (AUS/USA) – neo bluegrass
  • The Stetson Family – alt. country/bluegrass
  • Merri Creek Pickers – country folk rock
  • Doug Widner & Friends (USA) – gospel/mountain music/jam Kat Mear – bluegrass and old-time

Inspiration for the JamGrass Music Festival (JMF) was found when the newly formed Jambands Australia began video documenting a variety of up and coming bands throughout Melbourne. It quickly became clear that there were a number of emerging progressive bluegrass bands that were seeking to find an Australian audience for a musical style that originates from the Appalachia region of the United States.

JMF seeks to bridge the gap between traditional bluegrass scene and the wider music audience
in Australia who are often unaware of the raw power of the genre. There’s a growing following of progressive bluegrass or ‘newgrass’ bands in the U.S. which are helping to bring bluegrass music to a new generation of music lovers.

The Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado is a perfect example of an event that continually supports a range of traditional, progressive and bluegrass influenced bands. These bands highlight the bluegrass traditions within a modern context and strengthen the overall awareness and appreciation for bluegrass music.

Recent reports from the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival San Francisco have indicated crowds of over 600,000 who have shown up to see many of the country’s leading bluegrass musicians perform along side Broken Social Scene, Robert Plant and Gomez.

From a similar perspective, the JamGrass Music Festival is not strictly about bluegrass, but it seeks to draw on a range of musical styles and influences that will help promote bluegrass music to a new audience. There will be lots of bluegrass classics, but the JamGrass stage will be one that supports musicians to experiment, collaborate and push musical boundaries.

Jambands Australia has partnered with Melbourne Music Week to help bring this event to the wider Melbourne music audience and hope this will generate new fans while encouraging more Australian artists to explore this genre in one form or another.

Support from the bluegrass community has been tremendous and there is an excitement among the bands that is sure to translate into an incredible night of music – Jason Taylor from Jambands Australia.

JamGrass Music Festival is scheduled for 26th November 2011 at Bella Union @ Trades Hall, on the corner of Lygon Street and Victoria Parade, Carlton Doors open at 7:30 PM.

Tickets – Bella Union Tickets Service  just $15.00 plus booking fee.

JamGrass Music Festival

29 Sep, 11 by Greg McGrath

Here’s news of another music festival which will have a bluegrass focus according to the news release this week.

The JamGrass Music Festival is to be held on 26th November 2011 at Bella Union at Trades Hall, Carlton Victoria. The inaugural JamGrass Music Festival aims to be a movement including mandolins, guitars and banjos. But according to the website it’s like nothing you’ve ever heard it before.

The inaugural JamGrass Music Festival will deliver a bill of Australia’s hottest new bluegrass and bluegrass influenced bands in a foot stompin’, string pickin’, whiskey drinkin’, booty shakin’ party at the glorious Bella Union @ Trades Hall in Carlton.JamGrass

Organisers have talked to us of their love of bluegrass and are supporters of all the traditional bluegrass events that happen throughout Australia.  But they’ve identified an opportunity to fill a gap between the more traditional bluegrass scene and the wider music audience of Australia, much of which is unaware of the raw power of the genre.

There’s a growing following of progressive bluegrass or  ‘newgrass’ bands in the U.S. which are helping to bring bluegrass music to a new generation of music lovers and we think this is great.
We’ve partnered with Melbourne Music Week to help bring this event to the wider Melbourne music audience and hope this will generate new fans while encouraging more Australian artists to explore this genre in one form or another – The JamGrass Team.

So far, support for the JamGrass concept from bands and others in the bluegrass community has been tremendous and there are some exciting artist announcements to make over the coming weeks.  The night itself will be held in a fantastic room with incredible music, great prizes and special guests.
