SA Bluegrass Jam Sessions Up and Running

5 Apr, 18 by Greg McGrath

Michael Murphy – far right.

Regular bluegrass jam sessions have kicked off in South Australia in the Adelaide region on the first Sunday of the month session in March.

The inaugural session kicked-off at the Semaphore RSL with twenty pickers in attendance. Musicians included a mix of all bluegrass instruments – banjo, mandolin, Dobro, bass, guitar and fiddle. There was a mix of playing abilities from beginner to more accomplished players that all went with the flow. They played a wide variety of bluegrass standards.

The Adelaide region Bluegrass Slow Jam sessions are being held the first Sunday of the month from 2:00pm – 4:30Pm at the Semaphore RSL at 10 Semaphore Road, Semaphore. A gold coin donation to assist returning service men and women is appreciated.

Further enquiries can be directed to Michael Murphy on 0427 601 517.

Michael Murphy has been a regular attendee to the South Australian bluegrass jam camps run by Jam Camps Australia under the tutelage of Pete Wernick* from the USA. His enthusiasm for bluegrass music and jamming has seen him flourish and energised his efforts towards a new opportunity for South Australian jammers.

Jam Camps Australia host annual jam camps in several states across Australia. Previous jam camps have included Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. All of the past jam camps have been very successful in teaching people to play bluegrass music in an informal jam environment. So successful that several people such as Michael Murphy have taken up the challenge to start their own slow-jams, encouraging others to play bluegrass music at their own level with others.

* Pete Wernick runs several jam camps across the USA and has a host of qualified instructors world-wide who deliver his highly successful program for learning to jam.

11 Jun, 16 by Greg McGrath

wernickWe have recently announced the dates and opened sales for our 2016 South Australian Jam Camp. The 2015 jam camp  was very successful and this year’s camp will be held in Quorn SA.

The 2016 jam camp in South Australia is scheduled to run from (arriving Thu 27th Aug) Friday 26th to Sunday 28th August 2016.

This camp is subsided with just $250.00 registration fee covering all tuition, handouts, shared accommodation and includes all meals.

Visit the sign up page now to enrol.

What students have said:

  • It is an excellent program designed to build confidence in bluegrass jamming skills and musicianship for people with at all levels of instrument and singing skills
  • As beginner Bluegrassers we both enjoyed the inclusive and helpful atmosphere that you encourage. This year I felt much more relaxed about playing with others from the outset, because of the skills learned at your jamcamp.
  • I knew your Wernick camp was going to be less stressful than other style camps I have attended and it was
  • A weekend of strangers becoming friends, laughter, music, and gold-plated advice can only be regarded as a success. I was proud to be part of it and look forward to being a part of it in the future.

Gembrook Jamcamp

11 Jan, 12 by Greg McGrath

Jam Camp 2011We have just placed our second jam camp on sale. The first camp for 2012 will be held in Gembrook in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. The venue is Stringybark Lodge which provides all meals and accommodation.

One of the most frequent comments on the success or otherwise of our last camp in Caloundra was that because it was held in a school venue there was no opportunity for people to gather after hours to jam or put into practice the day’s learnings. So this year’s camps are scheduled for venues where people can stay on in accommodation and jam to their heart’s content.

The details of the camp are posted up on our website – Jam Camps Australia.

The dates are 10th to 12th March 2012.

For those unsure and want more information please email us at jamcamps@australianbluegrass.com.
