Mike and Peter Hayes were born in England after their mother’s third marriage to an Irishman. In 1956 the family moved to Melbourne.

The Hayes Brothers early musical influences were from listening to the radio. They heard Australian country artists such as Tex Morton and Smokey Dawson as well a American artists such as the Weavers.
