Mountain Home Honours Doyle Lawson

by | 13 Sep, 2012

Mountain Home Music pays tribute to the legendary Bluegrass artist Doyle Lawson in the year of his IBMA Hall of Fame induction with this collection of rare photos and videos.

Doyle was born on April 20, 1944 in Ford Town, a part of Sullivan County, near Kingsport, TN, to Leonard and Minnie Lawson.  As far back as he can recall, he loved the sound of music which was a regular feature on the family radio with the Grand Ole Opry. Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys was a favourite at the time.

Doyles parents and his sister  sang Gospel music as members of various trios and quartets passing on to Doyle the tradition of quartet singing.

Doyle was introduced to the mandolin at age 11 or 12 years old.  A couple of years later Doyle was introduced to Jimmy Martin and another fours years passed before he was offered a job in Jimmy Martin’s band. Doyle went on to play with J.D. Crowe, Country Gentlemen and by 1979 he formed his own band. In the months that followed Terry Baucom, Jimmy Haley, Lou Reid and Doyle Lawson laid the foundation for what has become the Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver sound.
