Nothin’ Fancy Release Love at the Five and Dime.
Virginia bluegrass favourites Nothin’ Fancy put their signature sound on a beloved Nanci Griffith classic with the release of Love at the Five and Dime, the first single from their upcoming album, Grass on the Barrelhead.

Love at the Five and Dime
Love at the Five and Dime is a heartfelt ballad celebrating love, life on the road, and the heart of a musician. The song showcases Nothin’ Fancy’s ability to bring a fresh bluegrass perspective to a timeless classic while honouring the spirit of Nanci Griffith’s original.
The song came together naturally during a soundcheck when lead singer and mandolin player Mike Andes began singing Love at the Five and Dime. The band immediately took notice. The song was one of Chris Sexton’s all-time favourites, and Curt Gausman remarked on how perfectly it suited Mike’s voice. From that moment, the band knew they had found something special.
Originally written and recorded by the incomparable Nanci Griffith, Love at the Five and Dime has long resonated with musicians and music lovers alike. Nothin’ Fancy’s version stays true to the emotion of the classic while bringing the song to life through the band’s unmistakable bluegrass sound, heartfelt harmonies, and exceptional musicianship. For Nothin’ Fancy, the recording is especially meaningful, given Griffith’s influence and the song’s connection to the lives of musicians who spend much of their time on the road.
Love at the Five and Dime features Mike Andes on lead vocals and mandolin, Jacob Flick on 5-string banjo, Curt Gausman on guitar and harmony vocals, Chris Sexton on fiddle, string quartet, and harmony vocals, and Jenkins on bass. Together, they deliver a moving and beautifully crafted interpretation that honours the spirit of Griffith’s original while making the song distinctly Nothin’ Fancy.
With more than three decades of performing and recording, Nothin’ Fancy has built a loyal following through their high-energy shows, tight harmonies, exceptional musicianship, and genuine connection with audiences. Their rendition of Love at the Five and Dime adds another memorable chapter to the band’s long history while introducing this timeless song to a new generation of bluegrass listeners.
Love at the Five and Dime by Nothin’ Fancy is available on all major streaming platforms.
About Nothin’ Fancy:

Nothin’ Fancy
From the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, comes one of the most entertaining bands in the bluegrass genre, Nothin’ Fancy. As a matter of fact, they’ve won the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) award for Entertaining Group of the Year six times!
Nothin’ Fancy was formed as a bluegrass band in 1994 to compete in a bluegrass competition. Ever since then, they have grown in popularity, released 17 full length albums, and continue to perform at festivals across the United States, Canada, Holland, and Norway. Some of our previous venues include the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN, the Lincoln Center in New York City, and the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia.
The band has successfully hosted their own Nothin’ Fancy Bluegrass Festival every year since 2001 in Buena Vista, Virginia (with 2020 and 2021 excluded due to the pandemic years). Their full-time touring schedule has earned them one of the most loyal fan bases in all of bluegrass music.
In 2014, 2013, 2012, 2010, 2009, and 2008, the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) honoured Nothin’ Fancy with the prestigious Entertaining Group of the Year award. The band has also been nominated for SPBGMA’s Vocal Group of the Year and various band members have been nominated for individual awards as well. In addition, Nothin’ Fancy has hired and/or discovered talented musicians who are still making a mark in the music of their own, and we were blessed to have them while they were among our numbers.
Their strong vocals, powerful instrumentation, and energetic stage presence, along with their friendly down-to-earth charm keeps people coming back for more. Nothin’ Fancy is not just carrying on the tradition of bluegrass music; they are contributing to the creation of a new tradition within the acoustic music genre. The band has weathered much in their 30 years of existence from major personnel changes to surviving through a pandemic, and yet the band of brothers that make up Nothin’ Fancy are stronger now than ever.
