Essential Recordings
Rounder Records has recently announced the release of CD’s under their Essential Recordings collection for $US7.99. One of the albums in this series is a compilation album of the music of the late John Hartford.
John Hartford was a banjo player, fiddler, singer, songwriter, steamboat pilot, author, artist, dancer and historian who took his tradition-based music to a very large audience, especially through his appearances on the Smothers Brothers Show and on the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour. His song “Gentle On My Mind” became a major hit for Campbell, and was covered by Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin.
As well as being a solo performer, John played with a variety of groups in his early life, including the Ozark Mountain Trio, The Dixie Ramblers, and the Missouri Ridge Runners. Here are the best of his recordings for Rounder and Flying Fish (where he won a Grammy in 1976 for his album Mark Twang).
