Johnny & the Yooahoos

IBMA;s International Band Performance Grant to Johnny & the Yooahoos.

The International Bluegrass Music Association has announced this year’s recipient of the IBMA International Band Performance Grant – Johnny & the Yooahoos from Germany.

This German band was selected through a competitive process and will be featured as a part of this year’s IBMA World of Bluegrass® (September 24-28, 2024 in Raleigh, NC).

Johnny & the YooahoosJohnny & the Yooahoos is a four-piece band formed in 2017 and based in the Munich area. Their high-energy retro-bluegrass sound mixes in other roots musical styles, along with influences from their native country.

The group has been steadily rising in the European bluegrass scene over the last few years, having played notable festivals including the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Bluegrass in La Roche Festival in France, the 2022 Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival in The Netherlands, and the 2022 Westport Folk & Bluegrass Festival in Ireland.

The group has seen first-hand from playing in Germany and throughout Europe just how passionate bluegrass fans can be across the world. Now, they will get the chance to introduce their take on bluegrass music to its country of origin.

Johnny & the Yooahoos will be one of many artists and performances you can see at IBMA World of Bluegrass® 2024.

Seeing my musical journey and love of Bluegrass reflected back by musicians from the other side of the world has been a revelation. It reinforces the fact that Bluegrass isn’t just international, it’s universal. We’re excited to welcome Johnny & the Yooahoos to this year’s World of Bluegrass to further our international mission and keep the journey moving forward – Ken White, IBMA director.

About The International Band Performance Grant:

IBMA’s International Band Performance Grant was started in 2022 to better engage and support our international community members and to provide an opportunity to spotlight one band each year for performances at IBMA World of Bluegrass® and a U.S. tour the following summer. The goal is to offer an impactful platform for excellent non-U.S. bands seeking a larger global performance presence.

A separate fund was created to provide a grant to the annual recipient to help offset the high costs of traveling to the U.S. twice and obtaining the necessary visas to perform. The follow-up summer tour currently includes performances at The Station Inn in Nashville, The Grand Ole Opry, ROMP Festival in Owensboro, KY, the Frankfort Bluegrass Festival in Frankfort, Il, and Grey Fox Festival in Oak Hill, NY.

Bands are encouraged to add any dates to this tour to maximize their experience. As of now, the selected band receives a $3,000 grant to travel to IBMA World of Bluegrass® and then an additional $2,000 for their subsequent summer tour. Additionally, the IBMA has partnered with its attorneys to offer recipients legal assistance with the visa process at a deeply reduced fee.
