I Still Call Her Sunshine from The Kody Norris Show on Rebel Records.
Rebel Records has announced a new single I Call Her Sunshine from award-winning country and bluegrass group, The Kody Norris Show.
An accompanying video was also released today and premiered on the website Cowboys & Indians. The song is a true “love at first sight” number that paints the picture of a lonesome traveler who meets the girl of his dreams and will spend the rest of his life trying to find her once again.
For the first time on a Kody Norris Show recording, banjoist Josiah Tyree steps out on lead with a soaring high mountain tenor reminiscent of the late Dr. Ralph Stanley.
Kody and I had tossed around the idea of me singing on a song or two for the new album. I was grateful, nervous and excited when Kody approached me about taking the lead on ‘I Call Her Sunshine.’ With Mary Rachel singing tenor and Kody singing baritone, it created a fresh blend and some new chemistry. I never dreamed it would become one of the singles selected from our new album – Josiah Tyree.
When not writing original songs, Kody Norris is always on the lookout for obscure gems, and this one by Donald Sowards fits the bill.
When looking for new material to record, you never know where you might find it. A good friend of mine, the late John Buckwheat Greene brought ‘I Call Her Sunshine’ to my attention as he thought it would suit the sound of my band. He was on the original recording of this with the Laurel Mountain Boys back in the 70s. Seconds into the kickoff I was hooked and knew right away that Josiah’s powerful high lead would certainly suit this number, so we reassembled our trio putting Mary Rachel on tenor and yours truly on baritone. We had a blast recording this one and sure hope it’ll be enjoyed by all who hear it – Kody Norris.
I Call Her Sunshine, features Josiah Tyree on banjo and lead vocals, Kody Norris on guitar, Mary Rachel Nalley-Norris on fiddle, and Cousin Charlie Lowman on bass. The band is joined by guests Darin Aldridge (who also produced the song) on mandolin and Tony Creasman adding percussion. The accompanying video was filmed by Amy Richmond and produced by Scott Sanders of Sunnywood Films.
I Call Her Sunshine will make its television premiere with Heartland TV’s Country Music Today on Friday, January 20 at 5:30 pm ET.
Additionally, I Call Her Sunshine has been selected for early playlist adds on Spotify’s Bluegrass Traditions editorial playlist as well as Apple Music’s New in Americana and New in Country editorial playlists.
