Dr Elmo Bluegrass Christmas – Time Life

Last month I received a CD in the mail from Dr Elmo. It is his new Christmas CD titled Bluegrass Christmas. The first track is a lively song, Come On Boys I’s Christmas, sung by Dr Elmo (aka Elmo Shropshire) which sets the mood for what turns out to be a delightful Christmas album.

This is not a banjo CD, as the cover may imply, but rather a very light-hearted and well produced bluegrass Christmas CD with some surprising original material.

The album features accomplished musicians, Dr Elmo on Banjo and Gary Potterton on guitar and bass mandolin and Dobro. Gary Potterton receives writing credits on five of the twelve tracks on the CD and also produced the album.

Dr Elmo is better known in USA circles for his recording of Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. This is now a Christmas classic which has sold more than 10 million copies since it was first broadcast by a San Francisco radio station in 1979. Consistently the most requested holiday song of the past two decades, Grandma has secured its place in American pop culture and made Dr. Elmo the king of comedy carols.

This Christmas CD is anything but comical as it features a number of beautifully arranged classic tunes such as Greensleeves, Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells and a great original song Perfect Gift which is my pick on the CD.

This is a wonderfully light-hearted Christmas album that features a treasure of traditional and original tunes that any fan of bluegrass music will enjoy and is available at Amazon.com.
