New Release From Amanda Cook: Down in the Quarter

Following the success of Amanda Cook’s single Ghost Town, Mountain Fever Records has released Amanda Cook’s highly anticipated new single, Down in the Quarter, a fresh and compelling interpretation of a song with a rich history, originally recorded by Tommy Overstreet before Charlie Sizemore brought his own bluegrass interpretation to the song on his Gravel Road album.

Written by acclaimed songwriter Sonny Tackett, Down in the Quarter holds a special place in Cook’s musical journey and reflects her desire to breathe new life into a timeless piece of bluegrass songwriting while introducing it to a new generation of listeners.

From the very first time Cook heard Down in the Quarter on Sizemore’s Gravel Road, she knew she had discovered something special. Tackett’s masterful songwriting immediately drew her in, painting a vivid picture through memorable lyrics and a melody that stayed with her long after the record stopped playing. For Cook, it was one of those rare songs that instantly felt as though it belonged in her repertoire.

From the first time I heard Down in the Quarter on Charlie Sizemore’s Gravel Road album, I knew it was a special song. Sonny Tackett’s masterful songwriting paints such a vivid picture, and the melody stayed with me long after the record stopped spinning. It was one of those songs that immediately felt like it belonged in my repertoire – Amanda Cook.

As far as Cook has been able to determine, Down in the Quarter has never been commercially recorded by a female artist, making the opportunity to bring a new perspective to the song particularly meaningful. Her goal was not to recreate Sizemore’s acclaimed recording, but rather to honor the heart and authenticity of the original while adding her own voice and interpretation.

I wanted to preserve everything I loved about the original while giving listeners a fresh take on a true hidden gem. It’s an honour to shine a new light on one of Sonny Tackett’s finest songs – Amanda Cook.

Sizemore himself recently heard Cook’s interpretation and offered high praise for her recording:

Wow, I just heard Amanda Cook’s version of Down in the Quarter, and that song could have been written for her. I’ve always loved this song, and I have to say, Amanda’s version is better than mine. Hers is the definitive recording of it. I only wish Tommy Overstreet were still with us. He had the first recording of the song, and I’m sure he would have loved Amanda’s version, too – Charlie Sizemore.

Joining Cook on the recording is an accomplished group of musicians who bring their own distinctive talents to the track. Amanda Cook handles lead vocals, with Carolyne Van Lierop Boone on banjo and harmony vocals, Troy Boone on mandolin and harmony vocals, Justin Alexander on guitar, George Mason on fiddle, and Joshua Faul on bass. Together, the musicians create a recording that stays rooted in the traditional bluegrass spirit of the song while giving it a fresh and contemporary energy.

Down in the Quarter is ultimately a song Cook believes stands the test of time. Beautifully written and emotionally honest, it continues to remind her of why she fell in love with the song in the first place. With her new recording, she hopes longtime fans of Sizemore’s version will rediscover the song while a whole new audience gets the opportunity to experience Tackett’s exceptional songwriting.

Down in the Quarter is available today on all major streaming platforms.
