Black Crow – Nigel Wearne

by | 24 Apr, 2013

Nigel WearneThose festival junkies who have taken in Jamgrass, Dorrigo and Harrietville may have seen Nigel Wearne perform there. He is a country/folk singer-songwriter whose music has an intimate and poignant narrative. Equipped with personally handcrafted guitars, his music melds finger-style guitar, country twang, honky-tonk and honest storytelling. With a hint of Hank Williams and influences including Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Bob Dylan and the spirit of Woody Guthrie, Nigel Wearne tells stories of mischievous bank robbers, wandering poets and his love of eggs. With frayed poetic edges and honest grit, Wearne is “one of Australia’s emerging songwriters” (Tone Deaf) and has “the narrative-fuelled prose of Paul Kelly” (Beat Magazine).

After a successful national tour late last year, April sees the release of Wearne’s second single and title track from his latest album Black Crow (released November 2, 2012). Recorded by Adelaide’s Mick Wordley (Jeff Lang, Chris Whitley, Jordie Lane), the 12-song collection showcases Nigel’s diversity, and has received impressive reviews across the board, most notably a 4 star review in Rolling Stone Magazine.

The title track, Black Crow follows the rollicking debut single Stealth which debuted at #1 on Amrap’s AirIt Great Southern Charts, and featured on Felicity Urquhart Presents Saturday Night Country Vol 3 compilation. Black Crow is a swinging country jaunt relating words of wisdom that takes you on a journey from working on the land, to Laotian temples and living through the depression.

Nigel’s album launch tour saw him perform in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide as well as various music festivals throughout Australia, including the JamGrass Music Festival, Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival, Harrietville National Bluegrass & Country Music Convention and Folk, Rhythm & Life. With the April single release and appearances at the upcoming Kingston Harvest Festival and Wallaby Creek Festival, 2013 is set to be another big year for Wearne.
