We have just learned that Bellyache Ben and the Steamgrass Boys have launched their debut recording on Yum Yum Tree Records. The album features a mixture of original material and steamgrass-ed up traditional American tunes.
Bellyache Bens voice belts out Willie Dixon’s classic You Can’t Judge a Book By It’s Cover over his hot pickin’ bands enthusiastic backing to open the album, before launching into a very unique take on Appalachian dirge O Death.
The album was successfully launched to an enthusiastic crowd on 9th December last year at Caravan in Marrickville Sydney. The band played for over 2 hours to a crowd who danced for just as long.
The Steamgrass Boys deliver high-octane bluegrass picking powerful enough to strip the paint of a ’69 chevy, served with a steaming pot of ma’s finest 5-part harmony, perfect for cooling off after a long, hot day shucking corn. Featuring the high lonesome sound of Bellyache Ben himself, spinning tales of hard livin’, sour women and banjos ringin’.
The band features Bellyache Ben on resonator guitar and lead vocals, Grant Arthur on banjo and Dobro, Brother Jimmy on mandolin and vocals, Bill Burns Brown on guitar, John Maddox on resonator bass and vocals and Nathaniel Barrymore Craine on the fiddle.
