Kane and Simpson Ride Again

August 12th, 2010 No comments

The Banjo – misunderstood, maligned, magic – out today.

News from the ABC this morning reveals that John Kane and Ian Simpson have released an album of banjo tunes today.

Ian Simpson and John Kane are two of Australia’s most accomplished musicians. On this new CD they bring you the most loved and famous banjo tunes from the much maligned instrument’s vast and growing repertoire.

Tunes on this CD range from Foggy Mountain Breakdown and Cripple Creek to  Scott Joplin classics The Entertainer and The Maple Leaf Rag. Even the music of Beethoven and Bach is given new life by this most enigmatic of instruments.

We have seen it in the chart-topping success of groups like Mumford & Sons proudly brandishing banjos as symbols of their rustic masculinity. It appears in the thousands of YouTube videos and popular comedians Steve Martin and Billy Connolly are both accomplished banjoists. There is no escaping it, this instrument is well and truly part of popular culture and it’s here to stay.

The banjo’s magical charms are impossible to deny.

We will be in Sydney doing some media around the weekend of the 18th September, and a few days either side. We will also be doing a gig at the The Guitar Factory in Gladesville, Sydney on one of the days in this period. More info later. We are still looking for another gig whilst Ian is over from Perth - John Kane.

Jane Germain and Ian Simpson – Duo Awards

January 21st, 2010 3 comments

Sharon Winter from the Boyup Brook Country Music Club has advised that  Jane Germain and Ian Simpson have taken out the The Western Australian Country Music Open Group/Duo Awards for 2010.

Jane Germain is an Australian songwriter by birth, and Chinese by heritage. Her songs are about feelings old and new – her music is inventively rhythmic as it is melodic. Her latest compositions emphasize free, brushstroke-like improvisations, which have been inspired by her recent experiences with other cultures and musicians and her life in China.

Accompanying Jane is Ian Simpson – winner of 6 Golden Guitars, an Aria Award with the band the Flying Emus, and is also 3 times Australian National Banjo Champion.

Ian has recorded and toured with many leading Australian artists – such as the legendary Slim Dusty, Paul Kelly and Keith Urban.

Jane Germain & Ian Simpson were nominated for the 2009 WAMI Best Country Music Act and have been invited to perform at the Beijing Music Festival in 2010.

The 25th Boyup Brook Country Music Festival will be held in Boyup Brook WA from the 18th to the 21st February, 2010.
