David Long Band – Redlands 2010

Submitted by Tony Lake

The 16th annual Redlands Bluegrass Convention will be held on 9th to 11th July 2010 at Redland Bay in south-east Queensland.

The convention is well-known throughout folk and bluegrass circles in Australia as a most enjoyable weekend. Each year it’s attended by highly respected bluegrass musicians from all over Australia and overseas.

Special guest artist from the USA this year is the David Long Band.  David Long began playing music when he was in school, starting with the saxophone and guitar until he finally discovered the mandolin and traditional music in college.  In 2002 he began playing professionally and has been fortunate enough to play and learn with Mike Compton who knows more about traditional music than most people today. Kevin Kehrberg (bass fiddle and bass vocal) has toured and recorded with the Wildwood Valley Boys and more recently with the Chris Sharp and David Long Band. Kevin is a graduate student in musicology at the University of Kentucky with a special interest in the music of Bill Monroe. The two other members of the band are Preston Schmidt (fiddle) and Scott Simontachi (guitar).

The Convention is held at the Kindilan Outdoor Education Centre at Redland Bay. All accommodation, meals, workshops and concerts are on-site. Workshops cater for all skill levels and are taught by the professionals. Workshops covered this year include banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, double bass, resonator guitar and harmony singing. The workshops are the perfect opportunity to learn a thing or two from the experts or just watch them in action.

For tickets, accommodation inquiries or more information visit the Redland’s website or phone Neil or Cilla Wills on 07 3206 9226.

You can read more on the Redland’s festival in the May 2010 edition of Capital News.
