This tune was played by Bill Monroe, the Kentucky Colonels, and many others groups over the years. The original author is unknown; but Joe Miller states that the earliest version he could find was a brief, unattributed version published back in 1814, in a book of sheet music titled Riley’s Flute Melodies
That version was so brief it took up only eight measures, and the title was Free on the Mountains. The Acoustic Guitar Website also has a video of Joe playing the tune and well as guitar tab.
