Yarra Junction – Vic
Yarra Junction Fiddler’s Convention – 8th to 11th April 2011.
Yarra Junction Fiddlers’ Convention is a Bluegrass and Ol’ Timey camp retreat providing musicians and festival goers an opportunity to catch up with friends, play music and enjoys dances and performances for three days on the last full weekend in February each year.
The festival is held at historic ‘Camp Eureka’ which is now over 60 years old. It is the last surviving campsite in Australia used by the Eureka Communist League. The Campsite in the Yarra Ranges was originally a farmhouse of which only the barn remains. The land was given to the Eureka Communist League in 1945.
The general invitation is to head over to ‘Camp Eureka’ and find yourself a bit of cleared bush, set up camp and commence to picking. This is a rustic festival atmosphere for lovers of both music and camping. Yarra Junction Convention features old-timey, bluegrass concerts, workshops, lots of jamming and dances.
The 26th Yarra junction Fiddlers’ Convention in 2009 was moved to Blackwood to avoid the risk posed by the Victorian Bushfires. Click here for details of the Blackwood Festival

Sean, stop trying to promote your business. You know very well that it has always been a convention for players of all string instruments, particularly in Bluegrass and old timey music.@Sean Kenan
You are listing Yarra Junction (on the Festivals lead page)as February.
There will be 2 Fiddlers Conventions- 2nd Blackwood Fiddlers Convention, 19th to 21 Feb, at the Blackwood Cricket Ground, as well as Yarra Junction 30/4 to 2/5. I am the contact for both. 03.94817662, 0419580642
Can you confirm the date for the 2010 Fiddler’s Convention? Ken told me last year it was to be in May, and the article says Feb. I need to know so that I can organise the friday off and am not keen on the Feb date due to the fire hazard.
Generally I do not post on blogs, but I would like to say that this post really forced me to do so! I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
Where are the fiddles? Lots of guitars and banjos. Is this a fiddle festival or a banjo festival? Do you think it is time to ban other instruments from a fiddle convention? Poor old fiddles are getting swamped by pickers and plunkers.
Yes, there were a few fiddle players there and a fiddle workshop run by Gerry Hale. However, the fiddle workshop was at the same time as Martin Louis’ banjo workshop. So, being a banjo player, I missed the opportunity to record the event. You raise an important point though, I should engage someone else to take photos when I am otherwise occupied.
Thanks Sean.
