Doyle Lawson and Caboots

February 9th, 2010

Bluegrass stalwart Doyle Lawson has announced a new partnership with Caboots, a Texas-based boot and clothing company that specializes in custom designs and traditional manufacturing. Doyle Lawson has a long held reputation for his colourful clothing in his on-stage presentation.

Doyle Lawson’s career has stood at the center of bluegrass and bluegrass gospel for over 40 years. He is the one constant in a band that has featured over 40 different musicians over the years. The band has been a training academy for bluegrass players—initiating, training and then sending out into the world, some of the genre’s most respected musicians. Throughout it all, Doyle has maintained his devotion to a traditional sound with his signature vocal harmonies and stellar picking. Legends are made, not born and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have spent 30 years carving out their own eminent place in the bluegrass pantheon.

We are proud to work with Doyle Lawson and see this as a great fit. His music and style truly display the values we strive for and honor – a love of country American roots and quality fun - Priscilla and Joey Sanchez,  Caboots.

Jane Germain and Ian Simpson – Duo Awards

January 21st, 2010

Sharon Winter from the Boyup Brook Country Music Club has advised that  Jane Germain and Ian Simpson have taken out the The Western Australian Country Music Open Group/Duo Awards for 2010.

Jane Germain is an Australian songwriter by birth, and Chinese by heritage. Her songs are about feelings old and new – her music is inventively rhythmic as it is melodic. Her latest compositions emphasize free, brushstroke-like improvisations, which have been inspired by her recent experiences with other cultures and musicians and her life in China.

Accompanying Jane is Ian Simpson – winner of 6 Golden Guitars, an Aria Award with the band the Flying Emus, and is also 3 times Australian National Banjo Champion.

Ian has recorded and toured with many leading Australian artists – such as the legendary Slim Dusty, Paul Kelly and Keith Urban.

Jane Germain & Ian Simpson were nominated for the 2009 WAMI Best Country Music Act and have been invited to perform at the Beijing Music Festival in 2010.

The 25th Boyup Brook Country Music Festival will be held in Boyup Brook WA from the 18th to the 21st February, 2010.

Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road – CD Release

January 18th, 2010

Rural Rhythm Records has announced the upcoming 13th April, 2010  release of Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road’s new album, Carolina Hurricane.

The music is hard driving bluegrass  from Carolina Road band members, Lorraine Jordan, Josh Goforth, Ben Greene, Dustin Benson and Brad Hudson, along with guests, Kevin Richardson, Jason Moore, Greg Luck, Alan Perdue, Ronnie Stewart, Josh Crowe, and Wayne Crowe.  The album was produced by Josh Goforth and Lorraine Jordan and engineered by Greg Luck.

For several years now I have witnessed the tremendous amount energy and excitement along with a strong sense of confidence and pride Lorraine Jordan has playing her style of hard drivin’ bluegrass.  This not only holds true to Lorraine Jordan as an artist, but also carries over into several important industry album projects she has been involved with over the years.  Lorraine is such a strong force in the bluegrass community that we wanted her to be a part of our team and Rural Rhythm Family. So, what’s more appropriate for her debut Rural Rhythm album title than Carolina Hurricane. This title surely says it all - Rural Rhythm President, Sam Passamano, Jr.

Missing Guitar Alert – De Gruchy Dreadnought

January 9th, 2010

Daniel Watkins’ De Gruchy dreadnought guitar has been taken from the festival he last played at over the January long weekend.

The following words from Daniel explain the loss.

I hope everyone has been enjoying their new year, taking it easy and enjoying some free time before its time to get busy again. Sadly, I have had a few setbacks since the start of 2010. the biggest setback was having my guitar lost (or stolen, though I hate to think that) at the Woodford folk Festival near Brisbane last week.
I first noticed my guitar was missing on Friday 1st January 2010. I was performing at the Duck and Shovel Stage the Day before and, to my knowledge was the last time i had used it. I believe I either put my guitar back in the instrument lockup next to the stage or left it backstage underneath a desk
- Daniel Watkins.

The missing instrument is a De Gruchy dreadnought, made in August 2006 (written inside the guitar) and has a slightly elongated square headstock with Waverly tuners. It has herringbone inlay around the guitar body and sound hole. The guitar has a L.R. Baggs pickup inside it, abalone dots on bridge pins, rosewood back and sides, a spruce top (slight cracks in the finish) and is pictured below. (click to enlarge)

If any one believes they know anything about my guitar and its whereabouts, or knows people in the Australian Folk music scene who may be able to spread the word, your help would be very much appreciated.

Wilson Pickers – CMC Rocks the Snowys

January 9th, 2010

A self professed All-star Interstate Musical Collaboration

The Wilson Pickers are Queenslanders Danny Widdicombe, Ben Salter, Andrew Morris, and Victorians Sime Nugent and John Bedggood. They got together after a crazy idea of uniting some Queenslanders with some Victorians in the vague hope of inventing a bluegrass-style band.

The Wilson Pickers feature five individual singers/songwriters, who all embrace the spiritual feeling one gets when singing in harmony. The band creates an earthy energy by using purely organic stringed and reeded instruments.

The Australian-born lads dare not take on bluegrass traditionalists of old but instead are aiming to craft their own unique take on the bluegrass configuration of instruments and ideas which can be experienced on their debut album Land of the Powerful Owl.

News from Donal Baylor

January 5th, 2010

Here’s some news from Donal Baylor. I caught up with Donal when he made a brief appearance at this year’s Harrietville Festival playing with Bluegrass Parkway’s Tribute Show.

Donal is about to release a new CD which features him on fiddle and guitar. He is also joined by Hamish and Lachlan
Davidson, Steve Gilchrist, Chris Jacobs,  Mick Harrison, Mike St. Clair Miller, Ruth Hazleton, Andy Baylor and Pete Fidler. Pete Fidler also produced the CD.

As well as a new CD in the offing, Donal also announces that he will be playing at this year’s Cobargo Folk Festival with the reunion of Canberra’s The Department of Bluegrass and the Brunswick Music Festival with Bluestone Junction who are supporting US band Uncle Earl.

I was only able to make the Thursday night show at Harrietville recently, but I was amazed how big the crowd was on that night. It seems to get bigger every year and shows that the scene is in great shape.

I am presently putting the final touches to my CD, which should be released early in 2010. I am pretty pleased with it and think it has something that will please bluegrass and old timey music lovers and yet offers something a little different. It’s been a lot of fun planning, recording, and putting it all together and I’m really grateful for the help I have received from my friends - Donal Baylor.

Eamon To Depart the Greencards

December 3rd, 2009

The Greencards have announced the departure of fiddler Eamon McLoughlin, who has been a member of the band since its inception in Austin Texas seven years ago. Eamon  is leaving to pursue other musical challenges at the end of this year.

We wish Eamon all the very best for his future endeavors and thank him for being a part of the great musical journey over the past seven years - Kym and Carol.

Eamon would like to thank Kym and Carol for this wonderful adventure together, and many more thanks to all of the people who have supported the band — anyone who has come to a show, listened to our music, played the band on the radio, and everyone who took a risk on the band when no-one knew who we were. With all sincerity, thank you very much - Eamon McLoughlan.
